Vintage 1999 Sterling Silver Antique Reproduction Stamp Holder Envelope Pendant

A delightful little piece of jewellery history reimagined for the modern collector, this 1999 sterling silver stamp holder pendant has been beautifully fashioned in the style of the novelty stamp cases popular around the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

 

Designed to resemble a miniature envelope, the front is wonderfully decorative, featuring bold raised “STAMPS” lettering, scrolling foliate ornamentation and a beautifully defined envelope flap complete with a tiny simulated button closure. The hinged case opens to reveal its original purpose — a petite compartment designed for carrying postage stamps safely and conveniently.

 

While this piece has all the character and appearance of an antique example, it is important to note that it is an antique reproduction, hallmarked for 1999. Pieces such as this were created as faithful revivals of the charming silver novelties produced around the turn of the 20th century, allowing a later generation to enjoy the wonderfully whimsical designs of an earlier age. Rather than being passed off as an original antique, its later hallmark makes it a lovely collectible in its own right — now itself over a quarter of a century old.

 

The original antique stamp cases that inspired this piece belong to an era when postage played a much greater role in everyday life. Before letters could be sent at the touch of a screen, miniature stamp boxes and cases provided a practical way of keeping stamps clean, dry and readily at hand. Many were fitted with suspension loops so they could be worn on a chain, Albert, chatelaine or carried alongside other useful personal accessories.

 

This example retains that wonderful sense of Victorian-style novelty and miniature craftsmanship. The envelope form is instantly recognisable, while the ornate decoration and oversized “STAMPS” lettering give it enormous personality despite its petite proportions.

 

Today, it makes a fabulous pendant, charm or fob, particularly for lovers of antique-inspired jewellery, miniature silver novelties, postal memorabilia and unusual conversation pieces. It would look gorgeous suspended from a simple silver chain or incorporated into a charm necklace alongside genuine antique pieces.

•  Full English (Sheffield) import hallmarks are present, aswel as a date stamp for the year 1999, and a makers mark "RG".  Also stamped 925 on the inside of the envelope flap. 
•  Measures approx 29mm X 23mm.
•  Weighs 5.60 grams.

 

CONDITION

 

Very good preloved condition, with only minor signs of wear.  Some fine marks, scratches and mild patina are present.  No dents or notable damage.
