Step back in time to the early years of the First World War with this wonderfully whimsical and highly collectable antique sterling silver 'FUMSUP' Touch Wud lucky charm – an iconic piece of British history dating to circa 1914.
Far more than just a novelty charm, the FUMSUP became one of the most recognisable symbols of hope and good fortune during the First World War.
Given by sweethearts, wives and mothers to departing soldiers, these charming little figures were carried on watch chains, Albert chains and in pockets as treasured talismans believed to offer protection and bring their loved ones safely home.
Their popularity surged during the war years, making them enduring symbols of love, luck and remembrance.
This delightful example features the classic articulated sterling silver body, complete with its original carved wooden head, charming white glass eyes, and fully functioning articulated arms. Raise the arms and the little figure performs the traditional "Touch Wood" gesture by placing its hands against its wooden head—a clever combination of two ancient symbols of good fortune: the familiar "thumbs up" and the long-held superstition of touching wood to ward off bad luck.
The front is crisply impressed "FUMSUP", while the reverse bears its original Registered Design (RD) number, confirming it as an authentic early production example from the First World War era. Examples retaining their original wooden head, glass eyes and working articulated arms have become increasingly sought after by collectors, as many surviving pieces have suffered losses or repairs over the past century.
This charming little survivor remains in lovely antique condition, displaying the honest wear and beautiful patina that only more than a century of history can produce. The wooden head has developed a rich aged colour, the original glass eyes remain intact, and the articulated arms still move freely as intended.
Whether you're a collector of antique sterling silver, First World War memorabilia, lucky charms, or simply appreciate the wonderfully imaginative craftsmanship of the Edwardian era, this is a piece that tells a remarkable story. It is equal parts jewellery, folklore and social history—a tangible reminder of the optimism, affection and enduring superstitions that accompanied a generation through one of history's most challenging periods.
A truly charming and increasingly collectible antique that would make a wonderful addition to any quality antique jewellery collection or a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates rare pieces with genuine historical significance.
